Luge Sport Programs

Luge programs are offered for ages 8 and up, and include introductory one-time sessions, full-season novice/advanced training and year-round high performance programs (at this point, no seasonal luge programming is available for adults).

A clear pathway (see table below) leads children and youth through their progression levels, up to potentially qualifying for Luge Canada's Next Gen squad or the National Teams:


(target ages 8-14)

First-touch, one-session programs such as Discover Luge or the Sliding School program. Athletes are familiarized with the sport of Luge with actual on-ice sliding. 

NOVICE Learn to Luge/Youth C, D, E
(target ages 8-12)

Winter season program (November to March), with sliding between one to four evenings/week, depending on skill and commitment level. Opportunities to participate in competitions and to join a training/competition trip to Calgary.

(target ages 13-14)

Year-round program. On-ice training between one to six times/week from November to March, with opportunities to participate in competitions and to join training/competition trips to other tracks. No training in March/April. From May to October, off-ice training up to four times/week (wheeled luge, strength and flat ice training, coordination development).

DEVELOPMENT/Youth A/Junior/NextGen Selects 
(target ages 13-14)

Year-round program. Training six times/week from October to March, with competitions and training/competition travels. Active rest months in March/April.  Five off-ice training sessions/week from May to October (wheeled luge, strength and flat ice training, coordination development).

Junior & Senior NATIONAL Teams

Athletes must have world-class abilities to be selected to these teams (selection is directed by Luge Canada).

Discover Luge (for ages 8-14)

The Whistler Sliding Centre in partnership with the B.C. Luge Association are offering the opportunity for youth to try out the Olympic winter sport of Luge by sliding down the track on their own sled!

Novice Learn to Luge (target ages 8-12)

Children and youth that want to pick up luge as a weekly activity can sign up for the Novice Learn to Luge program, which runs from November to March. Participants can train one to four times per week. Consistent coaching support ensures progression and skill development.

Development Program / Youth B (target ages 13-14)

The Development Program / Youth B group for ages 13-14 slides 4-6 times for the full-time program, which also includes summer training. Newcomers to this program/first year athletes can choose from sliding once per week to four times per week (no summer training).

The Development Program / Youth A/Junior/NextGen Selects group is a year-round training program for high-level provincial development athletes ages 13-14, that are working towards moving up into Luge Canada's Next Gen group.

School Programs - Sliding Sports

New this winter, sliding programming is available to elementary and secondary schools. Students learn the basics of luge or bobsleigh in a safe environment from certified and experienced instructors.
