Stargazing Near Whistler: Camp Under Some of BC's Darkest Skies
When most people think of Whistler Olympic Park RV & Campground, they picture mountain views, hiking and biking trails, summer biathlon, and relaxing evenings around the campsite.
What many visitors don't realize is that once the sun goes down, the park offers one of the best opportunities in the Sea to Sky Corridor to experience a truly dark night sky.
Located in the Callaghan Valley, away from the lights of Whistler Village and Squamish, the campground sits in a unique location where surrounding mountain ridges help block much of the region's light pollution. The result is a dark-sky environment that makes it possible to see thousands of stars, the Milky Way, meteor showers, and, on the right nights, even the Northern Lights.
The Best Time to Visit
The darkest nights of the month occur during the New Moon, when there is little or no moonlight to brighten the sky.
For the best stargazing conditions in 2026, plan your visit around these three-day viewing windows:
- July 13–15, 2026
- August 11–13, 2026
- September 10–12, 2026
These dates include the night before, during, and after each New Moon, providing the darkest skies and the best opportunity to see the Milky Way and other celestial features.
If you're looking for a quieter camping experience, many of these dates fall midweek, making them a great time to enjoy both peaceful camping and exceptional stargazing. Secure your preferred dates by booking your campsite online at whistlerolympicpark.com.
August and September Offer the Best Viewing
While stargazing is possible throughout the summer, August and September are typically the most rewarding months.
August brings longer periods of darkness and the annual Perseid Meteor Shower, one of the most active meteor showers of the year. The New Moon period from August 11–13 offers an excellent combination of dark skies and meteor viewing.
September is often considered the best month for viewing the Aurora Borealis in British Columbia. Nights are longer, temperatures are comfortable for camping, and increased geomagnetic activity around the autumn equinox can create favourable conditions for Northern Lights displays.
Of course, aurora sightings can never be guaranteed, but September generally provides the strongest opportunity of the summer season.
Stargazing Without Leaving Your Campsite
One of the advantages of staying at Whistler Olympic Park RV & Campground is that you don't need to drive anywhere once the stars come out.
Instead of searching for a dark viewing location late at night, you can simply step outside your RV or campsite and look up. In the summer, the Olympic ski jump landing area provides a large grassy space that is perfect for bringing a camp chair, settling in, and enjoying the night sky.
The campground is also surrounded by an electric wildlife fence, providing additional peace of mind for guests enjoying the outdoors after dark.
